Condolences, at this late date, for the loss of your friend. I had one brief email exchange with Fritch, an utter gent, more than a decade back, as a colleague who was also a semi-professional storyteller wanted to secure rights to perform one of Fritch’s vignettes, and I was able to put her in touch with him. I’d read and enjoyed his work, including an issue of GAMMA I’d picked up as a collector and his MIKE SHAYNE’S MYSTERY MAGAZINE issues when they were new, and was very happy to tell him so.

Was Jack Matcha a pseudonym for Fritch? He’s credited as publisher of GAMMA, with Fritch as editor…and CHASE, when it appeared as GAMMA was staggering toward folding, was actually published by Health Knowledge, where Robert A. W. Lowndes was editing a string of interesting fiction magazines beginning with MAGAZINE OF HORROR and, for three issues, CHASE.
